I'm Back Baby.... Errr, Again.

Well, I guess that's long enough without posting on here.  To get the touchy feely stuff out of the way, life has simply been a little too stressful the last couple months to keep my normal routine, not just for blogging, but for a fair few other things.

The quick version is that I legally agreed to buy a house with my Mrs last year, but a few days after that she decided she didn't want to stay together any longer.  We couldn't get out of the house buy and neither of us wanted to live in the house on our own, so it was a very awkward and stressful twelve months.  Thankfully, March saw a lot of potential buyers view the place, we eventually managed to agreed a sale and it went through towards the end of April.

For the last couple weeks I've been enjoying the modest luxury of not worrying about the place (every time there was a strong wind, I was certain the tree in the garden would blow down through and go through the kitchen window!)  Still, the whole experience was pretty rough; lost a lot of money, had to leave my felis catus behind and it took a long time to come to terms with starting again at my age, but, thankfully, I think I've managed to get past that point now.  While I'm talking about this, I'd like to throw out a quick thanks to all my internet friends on the blogoshpere and elsewhere for their support (even if they didn't necessarily know they were offering it!)

Right, that's enough of that.

Managed a reasonable amount of gaming lately, obviously not enough though.  Played some FoG with the guys at the club; still an enjoyable game, but doesn't really grab me anymore. Scott at the club also ran a Romans vs Britons game using a new (to me) ruleset, the name of which escapes me.  A lot of fun, plus the fact that Scott doesn't run small games made it an enjoyable evening.  I also tried the Star Wars LCG by FFG, looks like a game with a lot of depth, but I'm waiting to find a regular opponent before I drop much cash on it.

I've also been on a bit of a buying splurge too; a ton of games have been added to the pile lately, notably:
  • Sentinels of the Multiverse.  This is a fixed deck, co-op cardgame which sees a group of superheroes joining forces to fight an evil supervillain.  The game itself is phenomenally simple, the rule book contains almost no rules, rather it just goes over the turn sequence and clarifies exactly what the different terms used mean. Instead, all the actions and abilities in the game are on the various hero, villain and environment cards; the game can be taught in literally less than five minutes. Sentinels is also supremely replayable, I have the base game and one expansion and have yet to play the same combination of heroes, villains and environments twice.  Lastly, the game doesn't use any existing IP; instead all the characters are original creations and it's very enjoyable reading the humorous fluff for each one.  My favorite hero so far is Fanatic, a crusading angel smiting her enemies, while the most entertaining villain is Baron Blade, a mad scientist determined to crash the moon into Earth!  An outstanding game.

  • Star Trek Attack Wing.  Right, here's the issue.  I already play and love X-Wing. ST:AW is essentially the same game... with worse models... and poorer quality cards... and with some fairly broken combinations.  So, what's the appeal?  It's STAR TREK BABY!  Yeah, I'm a fan boy, so even though the whole experience is less satisfying than X-Wing, it's still Klingons against the Dominion and that's just full of win.  I just received the first Borg ship in the mail today (Borg Sphere 4270) and, ooooh, tiny nerdgasm, Borg Cutting Beam, Seven of Nine, Regenerate, what's not to love!

  • Malifaux Second Edition.  A blast from the past this one, I was playing Malifaux not long after it's original release a few years ago.  A very thinky skirmish game, but also a lot of fun.  Sadly, the game suffered from far too many errors, erratas and updates and I ended up bailing on an otherwise fine game.  The last game I played involved us using the original rulebook, the errata, the faq, the new rules sheet and the pdf of the updated cards, simply too much faff to enjoy the game.

I'm glad to say that M2E is a much better set of rules than the original, cleaner explanations of the key mechanics, less clutter and much better presentation. It's also been an excuse to pick up a couple of the new plastic Crew boxes LadyJ and Ramos and get some modelling in (I will get some painting done soon, I swear!)

I'm still pretty addicted to Android Netrunner, the most rewarding game I play with any regularity, but we're really struggling to get any kind of community together in Aberdeen.  Online, I use OCTGN whenever I can, so if anyone out there plays A:NR and uses OCTGN, feel free to get in touch (my username is Vladdd309.)

Been churning through the books recently too; I've adapted to reading three books at once now, based on what format (physical book, audiobook and Kindle,) compared to two (one factual and fiction.)  I listen to an audiobook on the commute, read the kindle in the house and a regular book everywhere else, especially the bath.  Currently reading the original Foundation trilogy by Asimov, forgotten just how good it is.  Expect a few Two Minute Reviews to follow soon.

It's that time of year again, the IPL is back (coom on the Kings XI!) as well as the Giro.  A few more weeks and I can start pretending again that I like tennis, then it's the Tour and the golf.  Not enough hours in the week!

Lastly, on a complete impulse, I bought a PS Vita in March.  I'm a Xbox fan, but haven't been able to either use the 360 I have much nor pick up the new console.  My laptop isn't up to playing a game so the Vita has been a godsend.  Notably, Killzone Mercenary has just been eating up the dead hour between ten and eleven at night and Wipeout is just as great as it was back in 1994!

Anyway, thanks to those of you have stuck around to read all this.  I'll try not to leave it so long until the next post!  S.

Rationalizing. . . Or selling off some unwanted loot.

Part of this past weekend saw me spending some time rationalizing (terrible word!) my wargaming activities and priorities.  This meant making some decisions about what games to keep around and what to move on.  In the end, three things have been given the heave:

First to go was Malifaux.  I've played a couple dozen games of Malifaux, but can honestly say I haven't really enjoyed any of them.  The first few games, we were still learning the rules.  Then, I played a few games with my first starter set; moving on to trying a couple other crews.  In the end, I'm perfectly comfortable with the rules and have worked out several different tactics, but I'm still waiting for the fun to start!  I still think it's a very commendable game, with a great card mechanic and some wonderful background fiction and artwork, but I've decided it's just not for me.

Secondly, some WWII stuff has gone.  Some rules, Disposable Heroes & A Coffin for Seven Brothers and Rapid Fire, and some miniatures, 28mm Bolt Action Brits.   Why these choices? Well, I don't see any point in collecting the same army in two different scales (I have a 15mm Brit Infantry army for Flames of War,)  and I've never really liked some of the mechanics in either of the two rule sets.

Lastly, the last of my Warhammer stuff has been packed up and is ready to ship out.  Actually, I only have a couple of  army books and some unpainted Vampire Counts miniature left.  I've never been able to enjoy 8th Edition Warhammer.  When it was first released, I felt that GW had
accentuated all of the things I disliked about WH Fantasy; random movement, random magic, super-hero characters, uber-monsters.  After a year or so, these trends seem to be firmly entrenched in GW's business plan, so it's time to say cheerio to Warhammer World (at least for the moment.)  So, for the first time in about 20 years, I'm not able to have a game of either WH or 40K with my own books and minis!  I'll still keep up with GW news and products and, of course, I'm loving Fantasy Flight's 40K RPG series of books, but for the moment it's time for a break.  Maybe with 6th Ed 40K next year I might change my mind. . .

So with a bit of space on the shelves, and some cash in the PayPal account, I kind of feel like starting something new.  No idea what yet, historical or sci-fi or fantasy?  Completely new game or existing rules?  6mm of 28mm? So many choices.  Any suggestions anyone?

I'm not a big fan of blogs advertising things for sale, so I'll just point you in the direction of my eBay page, just in case you may be interested in my castaways!

An apology and a cry for help!

An apology is due to the continued lack of activity on the blog lately.

Not being satisfied with having a jiggered hand, my back decided to get in on the act and put itself out!  As any fellow sufferers out there will know, this is extremely emasculating and involves lots of moaning and grumbling, coupled with an inability to do almost anything productive!!!  Thankfully it's gradually eased off over the last couple weeks.

We've also decided it's time to move house again, so most of my free time has been taken up with a (surprisingly large) number of little DIY and decorating jobs around the house.

However, I have managed to finally put brush to paint on a Desolate and Soulless crew for Malifaux.

I started out with two of the four Steampunk Abominations in the set:

Fairly quick paint jobs here.  In Malifaux, the sole purpose of these guys (four of them) is to charge forward on turn one and transform into the Desolation Engine, so I didn't feel the need to spend a huuuge amount of time on them.  I would have liked to blend the skin a bit more smoothly, but it looks fine from a couple feet away.

The guy on the left is pretty much finished while the other is half finished.

What I'd like from you though is a bit of advice on how to paint gore (the SPA on the right has been disemboweled.)  I've tried some reds with a darker wash, followed by some gloss varnish, but it didn't look particularly "gutty"  Just not sure how to proceed.

I'd appreciate any and all advice!

Yet more Malifaux news - When will it stop?

Is anyone else getting high?

Wyrd have been drip feeding more images for their Twisted Fate release.  Here's Lady Justice's Avatar form; wonderful painting and colour choice, great sculpt, but honestly, wtf is going on there? I assume the apparitions relate to her new rules or background in some way, but besides that, your guess is as good as mine!

Nightmare Teddy has also been revealed, but I can't say I'm too thrilled with him.  He's a bit too scrawny clumsy looking for my tastes, particularly his feet and arm holding the figure. The  original Teddy sculpt was genius simply because he looked like your average teddy bear with a horrific head and claws.

A couple nights ago, I listened to the first half of the latest D6 Generation podcast, which featured an interview with Eric Johns from Wyrd.

He brought up the new Avatar and Nightmare forms for Malifuax and, although not explicitly, implied how they fit into the existing game.  From what I gathered, your crew will start out as normal with your master, totems, minions etc.  Then, once certain conditions have been met, you can advance your master to either their Avatar or Nightmare form.  Eric made it clear that these new forms have been designed to have alternative abilities to their original, not superior abilities.

The best comparison I can think of is the Prime and Epic Warcasters from Warmachine; different stats and abilities, but not necessarily better.  Eric also talked about keeping Malifaux as a small skirmish game (6-10 miniatures a side) and the Avatar/Nightmare forms complement this, giving plenty of miniatures to choose from while not crowding the game with too many figures and rules.

I'm a lot happier with Wyrd after hearing this.  I don't mind games companies moving their storylines along, infact some companies, Privateer Press for instance, do this very well indeed.  Moreover, I was concerned about the situation arising where you're playing a game with characters that have been killed off two or three books ago.  And if that sounds unrealistic, how many of you out there bought all three Valten figures for Warhammer?  I don't even think his rules are in the latest Empire book!

Remember this guy? No?  I'm not surprised!

Having seen
Wyrd's release schedule for GenCon, Twisted Fate looks like being a much bigger release than Rising Powers was.  Hopefully we'll see the remaining models from RP released along side the new ranges.  I also hope that the Twisted Fate doesn't invalidate players not using the Avatar/Nightmare miniatures i.e. you'll be able to play normal Seamus against avatar Lady J.

Still, looking forward to the new book!

Lady Justice Nightmare Crew

The spooks over at Tabletop Fix have just posted the actual miniatures for Lady Justice Nightmare Box.

In terms of the scuplts, it's a bit of a mixed set.  Lady Justice, to me, is simply a bit "meh," not particularly exciting, just a "look at my tits" kind of pose.  Judge is a little more dynamic, particularly as he's stabbed himself in the leg.  Will he have some kind of self-inflicted-wound-for-X-special-effect rule?

The Death Marshals however look immense - I love the bear claw on the guy on the right's leg!  The guy coming out of the coffin looks really menacing and the third Marshal looks really nonchalant, casually carrying his coffin and dragging a corpse around.

The painting standard from Wyrd is to their usual high standard.

We've still no real idea whether or not these represent the Malifaux story moving on i.e. LJ and co are dead, or if this is an alternative release for some alternative rules i.e. Wyrd having a bit of fun with their IP.  Looking forward to the Twisted Fate release to find out.

Incidentally, I thought Judge has the "Never Me" rule to prevent him becoming undead?

Hell Dorado and Malifaux News

A couple of announcements have really caught my eye this week:

First off, Cipher Studios have finally announced pre-orders for the Hell Dorado rulebook!

Doesn't really look like a big announcement, but an English rulebook was originally announced back in January.  Plus I've had one on pre order from Maelstrom since April!  I haven't played any games with the quick start rules, nor do I own any of the models anymore (although I painted some up for a friend a couple years ago,) but hopefully the release of the full rulebook will get his game a bit more attention.  Hell Dorado has some great miniatures, especially Augustinus Raimond, my favourite:

Secondly, Wyrd have started releasing some preview artwork for the third (fourth?) book for Malifaux, Twisted Fate.

Unfortunately, Lady Justice has been killed!

Possibly this is either her Avatar or her Alternative form.  Neither term means much to me (Avatars were mentioned in the original rulebook though,)  but Wyrd have been using the terms, capitalised, on their website.  Interesting to see where the Malifaux storyline will go this time.
